Respond to Negative Feedback

It’s a good idea to respond to negative feedback appropriately at work.

You may be up for a performance review at work or maybe you have a boss who is good at giving constant feedback about performance, regardless of your situation, you are bound to hear some negative feedback at some point. How you approach, hear, and respond to this feedback makes all the difference, for you and your boss.

Things to Keep in Mind When You Receive Constructive Criticism:

  • Your boss wants you to be successful.
  • Your boss does not like giving negative feedback. (Or if they do, on some level they wish they didn’t.  I hope they don’t)

Good Responses to Negative Feedback:

  • Be Self Aware (This is a proactive step to work on prior to the moment of feedback)
  • Don’t Make Excuses (The moment you receive feedback is not always the moment to offer your rebuttal.  In any case, you can provide support for why you think the feedback is misplaced but do not blame others.)
  • Make a Plan (So you refused some negative feedback, go do something with it.  Set some goals, share them with your boss and then schedule a follow up meeting with them to discuss your progress.)

Aside:  I’m pretty sure this idea applies to feedback you recieve in any arena, not just your job.  Apply it to you marriage, friendships, etc. and leave some feedback – good or bad – as to how it works out.
